I Like to Move it Move it: Exercise and Parkinson’s Disease — Dr. Lo

Main Points:

  • All forms of exercise, including aerobic and endurance exercises, benefit people with PD. The benefits can include improvement in motor function, gait, non-motor symptoms (such as mood, memory, and energy levels), and quality of life.

  • There is some evidence that suggests that exercise may reduce the progression of PD.

  • There is no absolute best exercise for someone with PD to do, and no definitive protocol for one to follow, but recommendations generally include a mixture of exercises that improve aerobic function, strength, flexibility and balance, of at least moderate intensity, over multiple sessions each week on a regular basis.

  • There are many ways to maintain the motivation to keep exercising. Use them to keep your exercise program going!
