Karl Maki is a fellowship trained neurologist with expertise in movement disorders. He enjoys treating all neurological conditions but he has a special interest in Parkinson disease and other parkinsonian disorders, essential tremor, focal and generalized dystonias, chorea, myoclonus, tardive syndromes, tics/Tourette syndrome, ataxia, and gait disorders. He has expertise in the use of botulinum toxin for cervical, oromandibular and limb dystonia, spasticity, blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, sialorrhea (drooling), and migraine. He also has advanced training in the programming of deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices for Parkinson disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. He graduated from the University of California at San Diego summa cum laude with a degree in chemistry. He spent two years in basic science research at the National Institutes of Health prior to earning his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2011. He completed his internship and residency training in neurology at the University of California at San Diego in 2015. He has additional fellowship training in movement disorders from the University of Maryland, finishing in 2016. Dr. Maki is board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.
